  • JTTF Ordinance Becomes Law! Time to Celebrate & Keep Fighting

Yesterday, the Mayor signed into law the Safe San Francisco Civil Rights Ordinance which was unanimously passed by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, May 8th, 2012.  It was only after strong community pressure through advocacy, testimonies, meetings, and rallies, that the Mayor and other Supervisors agreed to a compromise on the Ordinance.  AROC is glad to see a step in the right direction passed into law — an Ordinance that will provide some real protections for all of San Francisco’s communities.

Yesterday, the Mayor signed into law the Safe San Francisco Civil Rights Ordinance which was unanimously passed by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, May 8th, 2012.

This Ordinance provides three key safe guards in the San Francisco Police Department’s dealings with the FBI through the Joint Terrorism Task Force:

    1. adherence to San Francisco and California standards when the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) works with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF),
    2. that before any new agreements are entered into between the SFPD and the FBI regarding the JTTF work, that those agreements must be subject to public review and comment before the Police Commission, and
    3. yearly reports to the Police Commission of the SFPD’s work with the FBI JTTF.

This Ordinance is part of a continuum of efforts to strengthen civil rights protections and to push back against the FBI and local law enforcement.

This work is far from over!  Our next moves include ensuring proper implementation of this Ordinance, pushing for a termination of the current MOU between the City of San Francisco and the FBI, and talking to community members to find out how best we can build on this victory to meet other community needs.

Federal and local law enforcement is expanding and creating deeper collaborations in order to repress social justice movements and maintain structures of wealth and privilege. We will continue to stand up against racial profiling, surveillance, and increased policing and imprisonment by building grassroots community power.

Through this Ordinance we catch a small glimpse of the power of our community when we stand up against injustice, tell our stories, and work together to create institutional change.

PLEASE JOIN US AT THE COALITION FOR A SAFE SF COMMUNITY APPRECIATION TO CELEBRATE THIS VICTORY AND LEARN MORE ABOUT CONTINUED ORGANIZING!
