Palestine & the Global Fight Against Racism & Colonialism
The Arab Resource and Organizing Center echos Palestinian rage and uplifts Palestinian resistance against the ongoing colonization of Palestine, and apartheid Israel’s violent theft of land. Israel’s attempts at annexation and dispossession are nothing new. But, amidst a global pandemic and the dangerous rise of global fascism, the latest attempts by this rogue state to push a modern day manifest destiny agenda–with the support of the US government–should be urgently and resolutely condemned.
Right now we are in a moment. The brutal deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, and the countless state-sanctioned murders over the years, have brought US society to a breaking point. People are mobilizing nationally and globally, putting up inspiring challenges to institutions and ideas that have for too long spread the violence of racism, policing, militarism and fascism. Today we are here to carry forward this fight.
Like the shameful and bloody history of white supremacy in the United States, the explicitly racist, Islamophobic, and supremacist ideology of Zionism has driven extreme violence, destroyed lives, and repressed peoples’ aspirations for peace and dignity in Palestine and beyond. Israel has played and continues to play a pivotal role in arming and training repressive forces worldwide–from the arming of Apartheid South Africa and death squads in Guatemala to the collaborative training between US law enforcement and Israeli security forces. Today, weapons and tactics used by Israeli forces against Palestinian people are used against poor and working class Black and Brown communities right here in the US..
And like our brothers and sisters and siblings in struggle elsewhere in the world, the settler state of Israel occupying our homeland will claim we are violent when defending our homes, it will view us as threats to their political and economic interests, it will criminalize us and call us terrorists when we uphold our right to resist, and it will place blame on us for being murdered and imprisoned. With the shared and different experiences with Black America, or indigenous peoples globally, we find ourselves as comrades in the struggle against state repression and violence. We are all sick of seeing our families dying at the hands of armies, law enforcement, and institutionalized oppression and racism against poor communities. To be in solidarity with Palestine means to oppose colonialism, to support our indigenous communities, to oppose all forms of oppression — from patriarchy and heterosexism to capitalism and racism–and to defend Black lives and Black resistance. Our dreams for a better, peaceful, dignified, and just world are dreamt together. Our liberation is shared.
Here in the Bay Area we are sustained by a rich history of resistance. We blocked the boat in Oakland, forcing Israeli ships away, These ships have not returned. We ended Urban Shield and said no more military training for law enforcement on our watch. Because of our steadfast organizing, we have made real changes. So, let’s continue to organize!
Let’s continue to push for the US to divest from Israel and to redirect that funding from war and occupation to serve the needs of the people.
Let’s honor that legacy of resistance by continuing to fight to put an end to racism, Zionism and apartheid in Palestine and contribute to the fight against global policing and militarism. And let’s continue to build with one another and be in joint struggle for Black power, for indigenous sovereignty, and for the self-determination of all oppressed peoples.
From Turtle Island to Palestine, long live international solidarity.
